Breast Enlargement: Frequently Asked Questions
Breast enlargement surgery – also referred to as breast augmentation or a ‘boob job’ – is a surgical procedure which is undertaken in order to restore the volume and shape of the breasts. Breast enlargement surgery is a cosmetic procedure, which typically uses implants to enhance the size of the breasts – these implants are normally either saline or silicone.
Breast enlargement surgery is one of the most popular procedures for women which is offered by Elena at her Breast Aesthetic Clinic, and the treatment is known to have the ability to improve the confidence of women as a result of their changed feeling about their own appearance. It is this positive impact on both the mind and the body which makes breast enlargement surgery a procedure which is in demand.
Breast implants restore breast volume which can be lost after weight reduction to achieve a more rounded breast shape and improves breast size asymmetry.
There are a number of reasons why breast enlargement surgery is chosen. These include; dissatisfaction with breast size and shape, a discrepancy between the size of breasts, changes in breast size or firmness, and clothes becoming ill-fitting.
A variety of breast implants can be used for breast enlargement surgery, including saline implants, structured implants, silicone implants and gummy bear implants. Your consultant can offer advice on the best choice for you, based on your personal objectives and specific breast type.
Whether your implant is inserted over or under your pectoral muscle is a choice which will be made after consultation with the surgeon, allowing you to discuss the benefits and preferable method. Elena is available to discuss the various surgical options outlined above before you come to a joint agreement about which one best suits your needs.
Breast enlargement surgery is a procedure which typically takes from one to two hours.
After undergoing anaesthesia, breast enlargement surgery involves incisions in a pre-determined location which aims to minimise visible scarring. The breast implant is inserted into a ‘pocket’ situated over or under the pectoral muscle. The incisions are closed using surgical tape, skin adhesive or sutures.
Typically patients will not eat or drink for a window of six hours prior to surgery. Before entering the operating room, patients will meet with an anaesthetist to discuss their chosen form of anaesthesia.
Breast enlargement surgery requires the signed consent of the patient. Among the potential risks of breast enlargement surgery are breast sensation changes, tight scar tissue forming and pain following surgery. In some circumstances, there is also a possibility of revision surgery being needed.
Soreness, as well as swelling or bruising, can be felt in the nipple region for several weeks. Rupture or deflation is another complication with a low rate of occurrence, and it should be noted by prospective breast enlargement surgery patients that breast implants are reported to have caused interference with mammography screening tests.
Breast enlargement surgery patients can prepare well for their recovery period by stocking up on certain items in their home, including: ice cubes; loose and comfortable clothing; cream and ointment which is recommended for helping the healing of incision sites; and magazines and movies to read and watch while movement is limited.
Breast enlargement surgery normally requires an overnight hospital stay. Following the procedure, the resumption of daily activities can typically be made after one to two weeks, but it can be several months before full exercise can begin again.
It is normal for your surgeon to give you a prescription which can help control any post-operation pain, and small drainage tubes might be fitted in order to deal with a build-up of fluid or blood. If you do have a drainage tube fitted, you will return to have this removed at a later date, as well as your gauze bandage.

Advice On Breast Implants
Since December 2018, many regulatory bodies around the World have issued statements regarding their own position and some have limited the distribution of other textured devices. The advice does vary from country to country because the research data available is limited and not conclusive. None have called for the precautionary removal or replacement of textured devices that are already inside patients’ breasts.
Breast implants however are not lifelong devices and in general will need removal or replacement at some point. In an effort to have more robust data about both conditions, the Breast and Cosmetic Implant register (BCIR) collects breast implant data for patients in England and Scotland. The MHRA continues to collect and analyse UK information through a reporting system. It also has links with up to date information from international public health organisations. The most recent advice from MHRA on BIA-ALCL was updated on the 4th April 2019.
